Dr. Taara Malhotra shares Vastu Guidelines for Flat Residents

Just because you live in a flat should not stop you from getting it designed as per Vastu Shastra! That’s what Dr. Taara Malhotra, the leading Vastu expert from Delhi and Gurgaon opines as she joins us and shares how Vastu Shastra, an ancient Indian architectural and design system, places importance on creating a harmonious and balanced living environment. Dr. Taara Malhotra has been a Vastu consultant for many significant residential and commercial projects. She feels that Vastu Shastra aims to enhance the flow of positive energy or “prana” within a space. It suggests specific orientations, placements, and designs that can optimize the flow of energy, promoting a sense of well-being and balance in the home.

“A well-designed Vastu-compliant home is believed to have a positive impact on the psychological well-being of its occupants. It emphasizes principles such as natural light, ventilation, and the use of soothing colours, which can contribute to a calm and peaceful atmosphere.”

Vastu Guidelines for Flat Residents
Since Vastu Shastra considers the impact of the home’s layout on the physical health and vitality of its residents, we asked her if a flat or apartment can also be designed as per Vastu Shastra. Our question is relevant since most of the flats and apartments come in self-designed general format and there may not be room for many changes.

“Vastu principles can be implemented without changing the layout or construction plan if there are not any major issues. I consider factors such as the location of the main entrance, the placement of the puja (prayer) room, and the arrangement of furniture to enhance positive energy related to wealth and prosperity. And most of the builders also consult Vastu Shastra experts before designing the standard layout of an apartment.”

It’s important to note that while Vastu Shastra holds cultural and traditional significance, individual beliefs and personal preferences play a crucial role in determining the importance of Vastu in a home. Some people may follow Vastu principles more strictly, while others may choose to incorporate certain aspects selectively. Ultimately, the goal is to create a living space that feels comfortable, supports well-being, and aligns with personal values and preferences. Dr. Taara Malhotra has shared some guidelines from Vastu Shastra that flat residents can consider –

Entrance: The entrance to the flat should be well-lit and free of obstructions. It is preferable for the main entrance to face north, east, or northeast, as these directions are considered auspicious.

Living Room: The living room is a space for socializing and relaxation. It should be located in the northeast, north, or east portion of the flat. Ensure that the furniture is arranged in a way that allows for free movement and conversation.
Bedrooms: Bedrooms are spaces for rest and rejuvenation. The master bedroom is ideally located in the southwest portion of the flat, while other bedrooms can be in the west or northwest. Dr. Taara Malhotra advises strictly to avoid placing mirrors directly in front of the bed.

Kitchen: The kitchen represents nourishment and prosperity. It is best located in the southeast or northwest of the flat. Keep the kitchen clean, well-organized, and free of clutter. The cooking stove should be placed in the southeast direction.
Balconies: Balconies or outdoor spaces provide a connection to nature. It is beneficial to have a balcony or open space in the northeast or east direction of the flat. Keep these areas clean and clutter-free. Put some plants in your balcony to ensure flow of positive energy.

Colours and Décor: Choose soothing and balanced colours for different areas of the flat. Light shades such as pastels or neutrals are generally recommended. Use natural materials and elements in the décor to create a harmonious environment.
Lighting: Adequate natural light is beneficial for the overall energy of the flat. Ensure that there is sufficient natural light entering the living spaces. Additionally, use well-placed artificial lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Clutter and Organization: Keep the flat clean, organized, and free of clutter. Cluttered spaces can obstruct the flow of positive energy. Regularly declutter and maintain a tidy living environment.

Vastu Shastra is all about Positive Energy. Dr. Taara Malhotra says that one can incorporate elements that promote positive energy, such as fresh flowers, indoor plants, and artwork. These elements can enhance the overall ambiance and well-being in the flat.
